What began as a passing hobby in 2020 gradually revealed itself as something deeper — a calling to take artistic skills seriously and turn passion into purpose.

Shula Mulenga Brown is a self-taught African textile artist based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her journey into textile and fibre arts began in 2020, and by 2024 she had transformed that quiet creative practice into Mulenga — a full creative business built on intention, cultural pride, and the belief that art should be lived with, not just admired.

Almost all of her inspiration is drawn from memories of living as a child and adult in several African countries, each rich with cultural heritage and diversity. Those textures, colours, patterns, and rhythms find their way into every stitch, every pulled loop, every felted form.

Beyond her studio practice, Shula regularly offers fibre and textile art workshops across Winnipeg, sharing her craft with the community and making the slow, meditative world of textile art more accessible to everyone.

She prioritises sourcing materials from Canadian and African small businesses that uphold sustainability and durability — ensuring that every Mulenga piece reflects both creativity and ethical values.

"
I currently enjoy using mediums such as embroidery, felting, and punch needle to create decorative and functional textile art. Almost all of my inspiration is drawn from memories of living as a child and adult in several African countries rich with cultural heritage and diversity.

I am passionate about using textiles and fibres that encourage sustainability — it ensures that everything I create is one of a kind. My hope is to enchant you, to create art you desire to live with, art that offers a sense of hope and belonging.

How the Work is Made

01

Drawn from Memory

Every piece begins with memory — a colour recalled from a market, a pattern glimpsed on a fabric, a feeling from growing up across the African continent. Inspiration is never manufactured; it is remembered.

02

Crafted by Hand

Using embroidery, felting, and punch needle, each piece is made entirely by hand. No two works are ever the same — every stitch is a decision, every texture a signature of the moment it was made.

03

Sourced Responsibly

Materials are sourced from Canadian and African small businesses that share a commitment to sustainability and quality — because the values behind the work matter just as much as the work itself.
